A song is a good place to begin.

Tasrif Khan recording, headphones on, at a studio microphone.

A room, a mic, and whoever was listening. From a quiet listen to a voice in the crowd.

Eight people on a sunlit lawn holding Kureghor's gold YouTube play button.Holding the gold play button presented to Kureghor for passing 1,000,000 subscribers.

Kureghor put its songs where anyone could find them, and people did. In 2020 the channel passed the mark YouTube gives a gold button for.

Kureghor was founded together, not by one person, and it has stayed that way: the same faces in the van, on the road, crowding into one selfie. Every song goes out under the band's name before anyone's own.

Where the songs are.

Then the songs started travelling.

Places walked through the way you walk through a song you are still writing.

And then it stopped being his song.

Written alone in a room. Sung back by a field full of people.

A singer on a stage between two arched windows, one arm raised, while the crowd in front films on their phones.
Between the archesThe front rows film the stage
A packed crowd holding phones up to film, lit red.

A singer in a mustard shirt sings into a microphone, his other arm stretched out, against a dark background.

Seen from behind on a stage, arms spread wide towards a large outdoor crowd at night, red smoke rising.

Then our country needed us.

We sang, we travelled, we had good years.

Then the weather turned. Disasters come more often now, all over the world, and our country takes more than its share.

COVID. The floods in 2022. Nobody understands things like that from a distance.

We haven't stopped since. We stay ready, we keep each other strong, and we keep trying to leave our communities better than we found them.

The cover of বাইশের বন্যা.

That part of the story is next.

Sylhet, 2022

The days stayed. So did the stories.

Weeks of them, with a team, in the water with the people living in it. Not a visit — the same boats going out again the next morning, and the same floor to pack on before they could.S03

Tasrif beside relief supplies on a boat, talking with a person in uniform.
Working out where it goes, and who has already been reached.
Tasrif wading a flooded lane with a sack on his head, a line of people in high-visibility vests behind him.
The last stretch is always carried.
People in high-visibility vests and in camouflage uniform gathered beside the boats.
Everyone who went out that day.
Tasrif in a life jacket, travelling by boat through flood water.
Out over what used to be the road.
Tasrif in a life jacket on a loaded boat, a second boat of people behind him on open water.
A second boat behind, and a day's distance ahead.
Volunteers sitting on a hall floor among rice sacks and loose onions, filling bags.
Before any of it floats: a floor, a few sacks, and everyone who turned up.
A group standing in front of a loaded truck, some in high-visibility vests, some in camouflage uniform.
A truck, and the people who filled it.

It was a collective effort. Tasrif's account of it belongs beside the contributions of his team and of the people they worked with — and his account is the book at the top of this page.

And it did not stop

One day. One wish.

Icche Puron spends a day with a child or a community group doing exactly what they wished for: a trip to the market, new clothes, a game that runs late, a meal eaten together. Nothing extraordinary. That is the point.

  • Choosing clothes at the market
  • An afternoon of play that runs late
  • Sitting down to eat together

Icche Puron · Episode 02Published by Kureghor · 1 April 2021

Tasrif in front of a small village shop, stocked, under a hand-painted sign reading

The line that became a way of working

Amra Chailei ShomvobIf we want to, it is possible.

Four words that describe how Tasrif works. During COVID-19 it meant standing with people who chose not to wait for someone else to act. It still means the same thing: the distance between wanting and doing gets shorter when we cross it together.

A record of work already done, not a current call for aid requests.

People in high-visibility vests and in camouflage uniform gathered beside the boats.

The call

Together is the only way through.

Whatever comes next, we would rather build it with you.

Not a line for aid requests.
